 The Senior Companion is a prototype developed by the COMPANIONS project from European Union Framework Six project based at Sheffield University, UK. Our work at the Centre for Interaction Design, Edinburgh Napier University was to interface with the project's back end. We were responsible for the GUI and assembled components developed by our project partners within this UI. The GUI was created in AS3/Flex with Papervision, Crazy Talk Avatars and good old fashion HTML. The Senior Companion is able to speak with the user using with Natural Language Understanding and Machine Learning backed by a Dialogue Manager: Dragon Natural Language. The Senior Companion is designed to remove the keyboard mouse paradigm by its ability to recognize human language and make inferences depending on the context of the discussions.
